How to Choose the Right Dental Impression Material for Your Practice

Selecting the right dental impression material is one of the most consequential decisions in restorative dentistry. The accuracy of your impression directly determines the fit of the final restoration — whether crown, bridge, denture, or orthodontic appliance. This guide helps UK dental professionals choose the right material for every clinical situation.

The Main Types of Dental Impression Material

Alginate (Irreversible Hydrocolloid)

Alginate is the most widely used impression material in UK dental practices. It is affordable, easy to mix, comfortable for patients, and sets quickly. Fast-set alginate (Type I) sets in 1–2 minutes and is ideal for study models, orthodontic impressions, and opposing arch records.

Best for: Orthodontic models, opposing arches, denture preliminary impressions, study casts.
Limitations: Poor dimensional stability — must be poured immediately. Not suitable for crown and bridge work.

Hospitrade stocks Zogear Fast-Set Alginate Impression Powder in 454g tubs, a Type I fast-set alginate with a 3-year shelf life and excellent flow for bubble-free mixes.

Vinyl Polysiloxane (VPS / Addition Silicone)

VPS is the gold standard for crown, bridge, and implant impressions. It offers superior dimensional stability (can be stored 2+ weeks before pouring), excellent detail reproduction, and high tear resistance. Available in multiple viscosities: heavy/putty body, medium body, and light body.

Best for: Crown and bridge, implant-level impressions, inlays, onlays, veneers.
Best technique: Dual-viscosity (putty-wash) technique using fast-set putty in the tray and light body injected around the preparation.

Hospitrade's Dental Fast Putty Impression Material includes 400+400g putty and 2×50ml light body — a complete kit for the putty-wash technique.

Polyether

Polyether is extremely accurate and dimensionally stable, with natural hydrophilicity making it ideal for moist oral environments. It is stiffer than VPS on setting, which can cause discomfort in deep undercuts.

Best for: Implant impressions, crown and bridge in moist conditions, full arch impressions where dimensional stability is paramount.

Zinc Oxide Eugenol (ZOE) Paste

ZOE pastes are used for edentulous (denture) impressions where a very accurate mucosal record is required. They are rigid on setting and cannot be used in dentate patients.

Best for: Edentulous impressions, mucostatic denture impressions.

Choosing the Right Impression Tray

The impression material must be matched to the correct tray type. Stock trays (disposable or metal) are used with alginate and heavy-body silicones. Custom trays provide optimal material thickness and are required for the most accurate VPS and polyether impressions.

Hospitrade stocks disposable dental impression trays (set of 10) compatible with all impression materials, in multiple sizes for upper and lower arches.

Mixing Tips for Consistent Results

  • Alginate: Use a cool rubber bowl and spatula, mix rapidly for 45–60 seconds. Water temperature significantly affects set time — cold water slows setting, warm water accelerates it.
  • VPS putty: Use provided mixing pads or dispense equal amounts from the cartridge. Work within the stated working time.
  • VPS light body: Use yellow or green mixing tips (Hospitrade stocks yellow mixing tips, pack of 50) and inject immediately around the preparation.
